Emirati Communication and Media History Interview

1. What were the means for you to hear news stories when you were still a child?

Back when I was a child, the only way for us to hear news from other people is to socialize with them or talk to them. Otherwise, it is impossible for us to know about what's happening in the region or of relatives.

2. In your time did you use any kind of media such as radio, phone, newspaper etc.?

Way back, we didn't use any kind of media. There were no radios, newspapers, and phones that could be used to spread news. We had to rely only on traveling people from Abu Dhabi and other places. These people used donkeys and horses to reach our place, or the other way around. We only hear news once in a while.

3. When was your first time to listen to a radio? Who was the first to have an actual radio?

When the civil war broke out, there was much famine in the land that we needed to relocate to another place. I first losted to a radio in the Al Mudfaa home. It was an old radio that used a battery to work. From that radio, I heard about what's happening in the world, especially with the Second World War. I heard about Europe and the fight against Hitler. I gave me an opportunity to follow the war, even when Sharjah announced its fight against Hitler.

4. How did you communicate at your time and what kind of trade did you use?

When I was young, we lived in a fishing village. We lived by trading fish in the center of the region. Communication was done only through face to face communication.

5. When was the time you ever saw a radio what kind? What did you listen to?

I first saw a radio in Al Ghurair home. It was a “Philips” radio. When the war was over, we would listen to classical music like Shadia. These were pre-recorded music that were played in the radio, but we enjoyed the music. The radio was not that good, but it provided a better experience.

6. Did you use any kind of phones back in time?

There wasn’t any kind of cell phones way back my early adulthood years; they bring their news by visiting each other.

7. Do you use any kind of media nowadays?

Yes, lately I went to a very far place or a country from UAE maybe 14 hours, I use mobile phones to communicate even from far away they made it so developed now.

8. Do you think people used media much more on your back in time or nowadays?

We haven’t used any kind of media; it was very rare to find radios, camera, and newspaper before the war.  Now people build their life through social media.
